“Google launches new bookmark sharing feature”
Google has recently launched a new service in the area of social bookmarking, with its new social link sharing service, which permits people to share bookmarks. It is called Google Shared Stuff.
Similar to Reddit, del.icio.us, and the various other bookmark sharing sites, Google Shared Stuff offers a way to share links with others via a browser bookmarklet that you can drag into your toolbar.
Google Bookmarks have been available since last October on the Google site, but have been recently integrated into the toolbar. Google added bookmarks to Version 4 of its Internet Explorer Toolbar. Unfortunately this is not yet available for their Firefox Toolbar.
Google Bookmarks have no “social” or sharing feature. In addition to setting tags, users can access bookmarks directly from the toolbar via a drop down menu containing chosen tags. Bookmarking is done via a popup from the toolbar that allows naming of the bookmark and any number of tags. A bookmark can also be edited.
To get started, you drag an "Email/Share" button to your browser toolbar. When you click on the button, you have the option of e-mailing the link or a preview of the Web page you are visiting to someone. Besides adding links to your Shared Stuff page or emailing them to friends, an interesting addition is the option to use Shared Stuff to post links to related social bookmarking sites such as Facebook, Furl, del.icio.us, Social Poster, Reddit and Digg.
You can keep track of bookmarks that your Gmail contacts have shared and see popular links, as well as subscribe to feeds for the pages. You also can add comments and tags to the items and upload a profile photo from Picasa.
There is also a globally available “most popular” page which lets you take a look at the most-shared pages and subscribe to an RSS feed for updates. Although Google Bookmarks has been around for a while, this new service adds the “social” component that other bookmark services have.
