Hyperlink means a clickable link in a text document to same or another text. Or it may be defined as a connection from one web source to another. Hyperlink is a means of navigation between two web texts to gain additional information.
Every link has two ends- source and destination. The text where from the link is being made is the source or anchor text. Destination is the page or text to which the link is connected. A hyperlink may be a word, graphic or icon. The URL of the destination page must be a valid one.
Anchor Text:
The word on a web page on which the hyperlink is made is the anchor text. An anchor text is important for it gives required and added information to the visitors of the sites about the content of a page. It also plays an important role to get high rank in search engines. Hypertext can be used in external links – link to another site, internal links – link to other pages of the same site and navigation map. Anchor text must identify the link destination.
Link plays a key role in success of any website in search engine page ranking for the search engines takes into account the number of inbound links to a site and ranks the site accordingly. Hyperlinks tie together different sources of related ideas without deviating from the main theme. Through hyperlink the webmaster organize a path for the readers to navigate to a different sites staying in the same site.
Types of Links:
There are basically two types of links
One-Way link:- If a site is getting link from another site without giving any back link to that site, it is called one-way link. This kind of link is very useful for the linked site to get direct traffic and link popularity and hence, to have high page ranking on search engine indexing for search engine thinks the site to be very useful one. But care should be taken that all the incoming links are from the relevant sites. One of the most effective ways of building one-way link is to have useful and informative content.
Reciprocal link:-This is the kind of link built by two websites on the basis of mutual agreement. It is also called exchange of links or “link exchange” or “link swaps” between two websites. It is an important part of search engine optimization. Reciprocal links increases website traffic to both the sites. It also plays a major role in search engine rankings.
Another type of link is triangular or three way link. It is also a kind of reciprocal link to fool the search engines. In this type of link a site gives link to other website and the second site gives links to another site of the first site.
Some Important Things to be Noticed While Building Links:
Prominent Link Text
The source text of hyperlink should be prominent in the entire text. In order to distinguish the link text it should be in different color. Many sites write the text in blue or red color. But generally the corporate websites keep the text and link text in same color. Another way to make a link text prominent is to underline it.
Changing Color of the Visited Text
As a different color is important for a link text, it is also important to change the color of the visited text. With this practice the visitors can quickly make out the text that has already been visited.
A Descriptive Link Word
The word from which the link is being created or the source text should describe the destination text. It is advisable to avoid words like “Click here”. Rather the text should be relevant one so that, the visitors will get an idea of the content of the destination or linked text.
Short Link Words
It is better to minimize the number of words of a source text. Maximum four words are enough to make it a link text.
Link texts are important for it allows the visitors to choose their own path and navigation through internet. Both source and destination texts are of equal importance while considering from search engine’s point of view. Hence, care should be taken to choose relevant texts while creating links.
