Recently, Yahoo declared support for a new meta tag known as “NOYDIR”. The new tag will harmonize the “NOODP” meta tag which is already supported by all major search engines.
First of all, let me tell you what this new NOYDIR tag is. Titles and descriptions are used in Open Directory Project (ODP) listings or in yahoo directory listings. Search engines use those titles and descriptions for their search result lists. But sometimes the title and description used in these directories do not match with the titles and descriptions that webmasters desire to see in the search result lists. This happens because the editors of the directory see the listed websites differently than the webmasters and he provides different titles and descriptions.
It is a very complicated task to change the title and the description of a website in a big directory. Many webmasters do not like to see the titles and descriptions given by the ODP directory in the search results page of different search engines. If you have used NOODP tag on your web page, then search engines do not use the title and description provided by Open Directory Project.
Now Yahoo also did the same task with NOYDIR tag. Because of this change, now you will get your result in a different manner. If you insert NOYDIR code on your web page, then yahoo won’t use its directory description for your site in its search result page.
If you don’t want to see the yahoo directory description for your website, you can use the following code on your web page-
<META NAME=“ROBOTS” CONTENT=“NOYDIR”>
If you don’t want to see the ODP directory description for your website, you can use-
<META NAME=“ROBOTS” CONTENT=“NOODP”>
If you use the NOYDIR tag on your web page, then your description will be created on the content of the displayed web page. But some cases yahoo may use the ODP description. So, it is better if you will add both tags on your web page. In this way you can see the title and description of your web page according to your content.
Here is a question – will it be measured as link popularity incase your site gets a link from the Yahoo Directory by using NOYDIR? Luckily, a link from the yahoo directory to your web site will have a positive effect on the link popularity of your website.
