Wed, 12th May 2010 - A steadily increasing number of businesses have been making the switch to open source, a trend that has put to rest the notion that servers were also going to succumb to Microsoft’s monopolistic tendencies. It is now commonplace to see that more and more firms are investing in Linux servers as opposed to those from Windows. The fact that some of the firms opting to open source are amongst the most successful on the planet immediately suggests that there is plenty of business sense in going that route.
Perhaps the greatest attraction offered by open source is that it's free and therefore unrestrictedly enjoyable. Money is not the main motivation here but rather the personal satisfaction gained from the experience. In as far as quality is concerned, the vetting factor in open source is strictly about quality - only the best makes the cut. It is the reading audience that gives the nod to whatever that's produced; while substandard materials are ignored the best are further spruced up by the audience. This is a great lesson for business – something that is not new at all - it is just that it has been lost to us thanks to the rush to make more money. Open source is steadily making people appreciate that working for passion bears a greater reward as opposed to laboring for money. Passion elicits a better quality product; a simple explanation why Firefox is being preferred to Explorer as a browser, and so on.
Another great plus in as far as going open source is concerned has to do with the level of productivity that individuals are capable of achieving. Open source does not impose the rigidity akin to office situations but rather gives a free reign. This freedom has really transformed people's mindsets with respect to work. Efficiency was previously thought to only be possible from a conventional workplace like an office but this notion has been quashed with the advent of work from home jobs. It is a fact that many people do not enjoy their timetabled jobs because the workplace is just too formal for their liking; injecting some fun into work certainly pays dividends in terms of increased motivation, creativity, productivity - this makes plenty of business sense.
Adopting the open source platform has proved to be a superb starting point for new ideas and their subsequent vetting for quality. These ideas, for example software solutions, are vetted by virtually anyone, which only serves to create a superior product in the final analysis.
